Why don't we have a sign for phone that looks like you're texting or something like that? Who knows? I mean, there's even some deaf people who have talked about, well, you know, why are we holding up the cellphone to our cheek? We don't even use cellphones that way. And now I'm wondering if the sign for a phone is going to evolve into, like, earbuds. And that's how a lot of younger deaf people sign it.ĬHANG: Right. A lot of people hold their smartphones - you know, you kind of cup your hand around it, and you put it against your cheek. But now we've got smartphones, and you definitely do not hold your smartphone that way. And when you do that, your hand kind of makes this Y shape.ĬHANG: Like a hang loose symbol, where your pinky is near your mouth and your thumb is near your ear. Picture the ones where you had a little dial, like a rotary phone, you know, and you would hold up their handle to your ear. Eventually, telephones became hand-held with a receiver. But then over time, the sign completely changed. So the old sign for telephone has you doing one fist below your chin and another fist next to your ear, actually showing you holding these different parts of the telephone. MORRIS: So the sign exactly reflected that. But you know the ones that you hold with one hand and then you put the receiver up to your ear with the other hand? I was going to say, I don't know if you've got one of these in your grandmother's house or something. It's actually a really interesting sign because 100 years ago, the word for telephone in American Sign language looked like an old-fashioned telephone. Can you talk about that? - because it is so cool how that sign has evolved. Like, let's take the example for the word telephone. So, you know, unlike adding a new word such as selfie in a dictionary, your reporting reminds us about how new signs are evolving for existing words. Welcome.ĪMANDA MORRIS: Thank you so much for having me.ĬHANG: Well, thank you for being with us. She's an ASL user, and she conducted many of the interviews for her story in sign language. Morris is a child of deaf adults, or CODA for short. And, you know, just as new technology and culture are constantly pushing the English language to grow and evolve, the same thing is happening with American Sign Language, or ASL, as Amanda Morris wrote about recently in The New York Times. In 2014, the Oxford English Dictionary, perhaps the most authoritative English dictionary, was compelled to add the word selfie to its pages.

While there was undoubtedly something of an unconventional nature about the workflow (and terminology) compared to some more mainstream DAW/sequencers, as a means of creating instrumental music from sample and virtual instrument sources, FL Studio has always been streamlined and efficient. The output of each Generator can be routed to a Mixer ‘Insert’ track (think mixer channel in more conventional DAW/sequencer mixing nomenclature) where you can process the sounds further using an array of the usual effects or EQ options, as well as making the standard level and pan adjustments to create your overall mix. Once a number of patterns had been created, these can be arranged (sequenced) and layered along a timeline of a multi‑lane Playlist window to construct a song‑based musical arrangement. Essentially, a collection of sound sources (Generators in FL‑speak - samples or virtual instruments) can be used to build individual patterns within a simple step‑based grid or a MIDI sequence (within a piano‑roll editing environment). The same core principles still remain at the heart of the software in the latest release. For those unfamiliar with the software, providing you have access to a suitable Windows 32‑bit host, running an early version in trial mode would soon make FL Studio’s roots very obvious. Rather wonderfully, there is also a pretty comprehensive archive of version downloads spanning all the main versions. Helpfully in that regard, Image Line’s website has a fascinating ‘history’ timeline page charting the FL Studio development. Given that the last full SOS review of FL Studio was quite some time ago (v9 back in the March 2010 issue), it’s worth providing a bit of background here and considering the over‑arching features FL Studio provides before going on to dig into what’s new within the latest release. So, with the recent arrival of FL Studio 20.8, is this now a DAW/sequencer that has moved beyond its electronic music roots? History Toys The subsequent 20‑plus years have obviously seen some considerable changes. Fruity Loops’ MIDI‑only step sequencer simplicity and modest cost gave it an obvious appeal to the electronic music maker on a budget a DIY EDM tool for the masses. By this date, the likes of Cubase and Logic offered a combination of both MIDI sequencing and hard‑disk‑based audio recording (albeit still in its infancy). That’s undoubtedly true of FL Studio, which launched as Fruity Loops in 1998. However, not all DAW/sequencers are created equal and one of the key reasons the market is so diverse is that many of today’s (seemingly generic) DAW/sequencers started life as somewhat more specialist tools. And, while you could have a very entertaining Friday night pub‑style philosophical conversation about the relationship between the rise of the DAW/sequencer and the quality of the music we now experience, the impact is undeniable. Second, by emulating the complete studio experience in modestly priced software, it has played a very significant part in democratising the music recording and production process. First, it has, to a very large extent, placed itself at the very heart of (almost) everyone’s recording process. Famed for its speed of use, the latest version of FL Studio is a highly sophisticated music production environment. On the iPodTouch, I do find it a little fiddly, there's always a danger of hitting the wrong parameter, and I've got a couple of suggestions that might just get me to donate if they're possible to implement in the future….ġ) There's no pads for making beats, this would be truly amazing, nine pads and an XY on the side for reverb splashes on snares etc….Ģ) Clip record and play function…. I am about to perform a sonic presentation for my degree in Music BA using TouchOSC – Livecontrol – Ableton (latest vers) I love the work you've done with livecontrol, I have no idea how you did it (I don't code…) but I think Apple sold another iPad, not because of their propaganda, but because of your LiveControl thing □ When the device is on in Ableton, the button should be red-filled, and empty when the device is off. In the device tab, the on/off button on the corner left should be a toggle button. the XY pad is … magic ! And so easy to use, I mean … just wow ! Even if it's not very easy to use on an iPod Touch, the sequencer editor is magic, I was waiting something that works this way for a long time !! the feedback on the volume faders (the green right and left levels) and in the clip launcher (position of the clip while playing). However, some points made this way more interesting: Hardware manufacturers beware: when it comes to wireless control, the iPad should be taken very seriously indeed. After some time trying to understand why it didn't work on my computer* I finally succeed !įirst of all I thought it was an emulation on µ from jazzmutant, without the need of maxforlive and obviously the lemur. In fact, iPad owners should be certain to check them both out before buying a dedicated hardware alternative such as the Akai APC40, Novation Launchpad or even the JazzMutant Lemur. Griid and touchAble set the standard for iOS-based Ableton controllers. We're intrigued to see where it goes from here - Liine is keeping its plans secret for now but we can't wait to see what it has to offer. The app is set to expand in the future, developing into a much more complete modular control system. Griid is a very stable clip launcher with a developed feel and a clear interface, but it's impossible to ignore the fact that it offers only a fraction of touchAble's feature set.Įven on the iPhone's smaller screen, Griid is a very capable clip launcher.Īlthough it might not be our first choice, Griid certainly shouldn't be forgotten just yet. Griid and touchAble are both excellent apps, each offering a different take on the Ableton Live controller. NEXT: Griid or touchAble: which is best? Conclusion The problems disappear completely with a direct connection. The app sends and receives a lot more data than Griid, so running through a router can induce lag and latency, especially when using the keys and pads features. TouchAble, on the other hand, benefits significantly from an ad hoc connection. Liine recommends setting up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network in order to minimise latency and ensure a stable connection, but we didn't notice any lag or dropped signals when running over an existing wireless network. Here we're controlling two parameters for eight tracks, but you can also pick a single parameter and view 16 tracks simultaneously. TouchAble's mixer section offers two modes. The overview mode, activated by tapping the bottom right corner of the screen, makes it even easier to jump around large sets. Griid would benefit from the ability to navigate by dragging, but scrolling the track and scene title bars is smooth and easy. TouchAble's plus sign-shaped navigation cross makes things easy to navigate, and it's also possible to drag the set around when viewing clips or devices. Editing device parameters in particular is far from user friendly. It's a neat setup, but the touchAble interface still gets cluttered or text-heavy at times. Pads on the top half and mixer on the bottom half? No problem. The app only runs in landscape, but the top and bottom halves of the screen can be adjusted independently. One of the nicest features of touchAble is the flexibility of the interface. The Clips, Mixer, Devices, Keys and Pads buttons running down the right hand side of the screen enable you to jump between the five modes. Tap anywhere to jump straight to that section of your set. Larger sets can be navigated in Griid using a handy overview. The ΛCDM model is the most widely accepted model of the universe. This unseen matter is known as dark matter ( dark means that there is a wide range of strong indirect evidence that it exists, but we have not yet detected it directly). Giant clouds of hydrogen and helium were gradually drawn to the places where dark matter was most dense, forming the first galaxies, stars, and everything else seen today.įrom studying the movement of galaxies, it has been discovered that the universe contains much more matter than is accounted for by visible objects stars, galaxies, nebulas and interstellar gas. Dark matter gradually gathered, forming a foam-like structure of filaments and voids under the influence of gravity. After an initial accelerated expansion called the inflationary epoch at around 10 −32 seconds, and the separation of the four known fundamental forces, the universe gradually cooled and continued to expand, allowing the first subatomic particles and simple atoms to form. Īccording to the Big Bang theory, the energy and matter initially present have become less dense as the universe expanded. Discoveries in the early 20th century have suggested that the universe had a beginning and that space has been expanding since then at an increasing rate. At smaller scales, galaxies are distributed in clusters and superclusters which form immense filaments and voids in space, creating a vast foam-like structure. At the largest scale, galaxies are distributed uniformly and the same in all directions, meaning that the universe has neither an edge nor a center. Many of the stars in a galaxy have planets. In developing the law of universal gravitation, Isaac Newton built upon Copernicus's work as well as Johannes Kepler's laws of planetary motion and observations by Tycho Brahe.įurther observational improvements led to the realization that the Sun is one of a few hundred billion stars in the Milky Way, which is one of a few hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. Over the centuries, more precise astronomical observations led Nicolaus Copernicus to develop the heliocentric model with the Sun at the center of the Solar System. Some of the earliest cosmological models of the universe were developed by ancient Greek and Indian philosophers and were geocentric, placing Earth at the center. While the spatial size of the entire universe is unknown, it is possible to measure the size of the observable universe, which is approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter at the present day. According to this theory, space and time emerged together 13.787 ☐.020 billion years ago, and the universe has been expanding ever since the Big Bang. The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological description of the development of the universe. The universe is all of space and time and their contents, including planets, stars, galaxies, and all other forms of matter and energy. Observable universe: 8.8 ×10 26 m (28.5 G pc or 93 G ly) The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field image shows some of the most remote galaxies visible to present technology (diagonal is ~1/10 apparent Moon diameter) The wage range, other compensation, and benefits information listed is accurate as of the date of this posting.
